  21. RasterOps SyncCamera is a utility application that allows you to perform fine adjustments on the refresh rate of your display adapter.  This is particularly useful for eliminating visual artifacts when you must videotape a display.

RasterOps video displays operate at refresh (scan) rates that are optimized to minimize flicker and maximize sharpness of the display.  The refresh rate, or speed at which the display phosphors are painted by the electron gun, is typically greater on higher resolutions.  For example, 640x480 displays appear flicker-free at 67Hz, but often 832x624 or greater sized displays are run at 75Hz for better appearance.

Video cameras (and television displays) always operate at a 30Hz scan rate.  When you point a video camera at a computer display, you will often see a horizontal black line rolling slowly across the face of the display.  This moving line is a by-product of the fact that the camera and display refresh rates are not simple multiples of each other; in fact, the line “rolls” across the camera output at a frequency equal to the difference of the scan rates of the camera and computer display!

  31. SyncCamera allows you minimize this annoying effect by modifying the refresh rate of your computer’s display.  By slowing or speeding up the scan rate to a close multiple, you can reduce or eliminate the rolling bar.

  33. Please note that SyncCamera improves the appearance of displays on video, but does not allow the display board to drive an RS170/NTSC input directly (unless your board has that capability).

  39. Since the display adapter’s normal refresh rate was selected for optimum performance, you may notice increased flicker or other degraded performance when using SyncCamera.  For this reason, RasterOps recommends that you use SyncCamera only when you will be videotaping the display.

  41. The RasterOps display adapters that are compatible with SyncCamera can generate a wide variety of video timings.  Certain displays may not be able to properly display all refresh rates.  This version of the RasterOps SyncCamera utility supports the following RasterOps display boards:

  63. No special installation is required to run SyncCamera.

  65. To adjust the screen timing for video recording, look through the video camera viewfinder, press the “Adjust” button in the SyncCamera dialog box, and hold it till the horizontal line rolls off the screen.
